New Coronavirus Variant a ‘Serious Concern’ in South Africa

The new discovery, called B.1.1529 until a Greek letter is assigned to it by the World Health Organization, carries an unusually large number of mutations and is “clearly very different” from previous incarnations, Tulio de Oliveira, a bio-informatics professor who runs gene-sequencing institutions at two South African universities, said at a briefing on Thursday.

“Here is a mutation variant of serious concern,” Health Minister Joe Phaahla said at the same media event. “We were hopeful that we might have a longer break in between waves -- possibly that it would hold off to late December or even next year January.”

Virologists have detected almost 100 cases linked to the variant in the country to date, said Anne von Gottberg, clinical microbiologist & head of respiratory diseases at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases. World Health Organization officials have met to discuss the virus, which has also been detected in Botswana, according to a separate statement.

In Botswana -- a neighbor of the South Africa -- the new variant has been detected in vaccinated people, Kereng Masupu, coordinator of the Presidential Covid-19 Task Force, said in statement.

B.1.1529 is likely to have evolved during a chronic infection of an immuno-compromised person, possibly in an untreated HIV/AIDS patient, said Francois Balloux, director of the UCL Genetics Institute. The world’s biggest number of HIV cases has complicated South Africa’s efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic, as immuno-compromised people can harbor the virus for longer, scientists say.

WHO calls special meeting to discuss new Covid variant found in South Africa with ‘a large number of mutations’

South African scientists have detected more than 30 mutations to the spike protein, the part of the virus that binds to cells in the body, South African scientist Tulio de Oliveira said in a media briefing hosted by the South Africa Department of Health on Thursday.

The B.1.1.529 variant contains multiple mutations associated with increased antibody resistance, which may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines, along with mutations that generally make it more contagious, according to slides he presented at the briefing. Other mutations in the new variant haven’t been seen until now, so scientists don’t yet know whether they are significant or will change how the virus behaves, according to the presentation.

    Immuno-compromised...not vaccinated thread...Ivermectin >>>

Simply, accordingly to the anti-vaxxers, Africa has low numbers because they use Ivermectin. Thus, Ivermectin against the new variant should easily keep their Covid Hospitalization numbers down.

If not...what does that tell you ???

    :D :sneaky:

A key takeaway, a new Variant of Concern that impacts those not vaccinated will impact those vaccinated much less.

Monitor the Covid hospitalization numbers because most global health policies react to hospitalization numbers in comparison to infection numbers.

This is apparently a major variant, soon to have its own Greek letter.

It's that time of the year for one. In fact, November to January is a duration time of the year when researchers give special attention in trying to find new variants of interest and new variants of concern.
    • Typically as the global population becomes more vaccinated...the duration between each new Variants of Concern will (should) be longer.
Thus, monitoring the duration between each...will give us a rough estimate of how we're doing as a world in our efforts to manage the disease.

The U.K. closed air-travel from South Africa to the U.K.

Currently, the European Union is deciding to do the same. Lets see how long it takes the United States to do the same too.

We have a few anti-vaxxer members here @ Elitetrader.com from South Africa that got wind of the possible new Variant of Concern and have profited off the news before it hit the global world. Bravo to them for being aware of what the institutions were focusing on for the past several trading days.

The market understands...how long will it take for people to understand that Covid will still impact their financial lives as long as it is encouraged to be prolonged ???

This is why I think some want this Pandemic to continue. In my opinion, one of the best ways to do that is to encourage vaccine-hesitancy and vaccine-resistance to the Covid Vaccines...the more misinformation / disinformation out there...

The Pandemic will be prolonged and it will continue to be a Covid driven economy. :wtf:
