Virginia Public School Students Made To Play ‘Identify Your Privilege’ Bingo

Students at Fairfax County's Oakton High School were asked to self-identify their privilege for an exercise that the district says "was intended to provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences while building their critical thinking skills." The bingo card contained squares based on race, identity, socioeconomic status, and family life and included categories such as "white," "military kid," "parents are married," "mentally healthy," "cisgender," "have your own bedroom," "Christian," and "able-bodied."

This is an example of the type of lesson plan which belittles children which should not be used in K-12 classrooms.

  5. Privilege= Having a dad thats not in prison for a violent crime.
Privilege = Having a mom who wasnt pregnant when she was 17.
Privilege= Having parents that teach their children right from wrong.
Privilege = Having parents that teach their children about personal reponsibility.
Privilege = Having parents that teach their children to try their best and understand that sometimes they may not make the team or get the job.

I don't like the use of the word "privilege" in this context; it's another example of linguistic Marxism. A privilege is something that can be taken away. If you are born into a stable family with two parents, you are fortunate, not privileged.

telling kids they're privileged to be white isn't belittling them. The opposite in fact.

That's not entirely correct there boss. Many privileges cannot be taken away*, but your parents can.

The word existed before American parents started applying it to children's discipline.

*short of an overthrow of society.

A privilege is a benefit that is less than a right.

A privilege is up to an including a right however it applies to an individual or group not to the whole. Remember, the term is ancient and part of classical systems etc.

Privilege comes from Latin privilegium, meaning a law for just one person.
