If the Assad regime used chemical weapons ... they should be brought to justice ... but not necessarily attacked. I would support an attack on a state that : o Attacks us or one of our allies. o Puts American lives at stake. o Threatens our vital interests. The Assad regime has done none of these (afaik). It has however (if it used chemical weapons against it's citizens), committed a crime against humanity, but not an act of war. Criminals should be brought to justice, rather than attacked.
We could ask him nicely if he'll surrender. Frankly speaking, IMO, it's his country and he can kill his own people however he likes. We have no business in it unless and until Americans are killed and/or we're attacked. People have the right to be savages. We have the right to kill them all without hesitation or mercy should they attack us, but not until they attack us.
