British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson blames himself for his sacking as host of hit motoring showTop Gear, admitting: “It was my own silly fault.”

The controversial star was fired by BBC bosses in March amid reports he threw a punch at a producer in a bust-up over the catering arrangements on a location shoot.

His sacking prompted an online petition to reinstate the star, which attracted more than a million signatures, but he has now spoken out for the first time since the scandal to confess he was to blame for losing his job.

In an interview with BBC Radio 2 on Thursday, Clarkson said, “It’s my own silly fault so I can hardly complain… (Top Gear) was very much my baby, I absolutely adored it… You do feel as though there’s a big hole which needs to be filled.”
