Short interest

Hey,
I would like to know why the short interest on a stock like 'GME' doesnt go down after a big short squeeze? , this is not the point of the short squeeze?

New shorts replace the old shorts who covered(closed) their positions.

Short interest is updated twice a month, so I’m not sure which 2-week periods are you comparing and how useful this is.
