President Donald Trumpsaid he asked Republican leaders in Congress to include a measure to raise the U.S. debt ceiling in a popular veterans bill to avoid a “mess” in which they have to rely on Democrats’ support.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin decided against tying the measures together, Trump said in a series of Twitter posts Thursday.

“I requested that Mitch M & Paul R tie the Debt Ceiling legislation into the popular V.A. Bill (which just passed) for easy approval. They didn’t do it so now we have a big deal with Dems holding them up (as usual) on Debt Ceiling approval. Could have been so easy-now a mess!” Trump tweeted.

GOP leaders in July discussed using a veterans bill as a vehicle to raise the debt ceiling. But conservatives in the House have demanded that steep spending cuts accompany any debt bill. Lawmakers are still trying to figure out whether there is a debt bill that can pass with only Republican votes in the House, or whether they will need to move a bill with bipartisan support that doesn’t contain any spending cuts.

Trump threatened Tuesday night to shut down the government over funding for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, which could complicate Congress’s job of raising the debt ceiling. Congress needs to pass a spending measure to keep the government open after Sept. 30 -- at the same time it’s facing a deadline to raise the nation’s debt limit. GOP leaders don’t have a plan yet for how they’ll proceed, but one likely scenario is to package the two measures together to get them to the president’s desk...

  2. Trump needs to tell them in no uncertain terms that they will not send him the debt ceiling and spending bill as one. They want to force him to accept their spending priorities, ie no wall, by tying it to the debt limit. This is where having a reputation for being crazy is useful. Trump can threaten to veto the debt limit and for all they know, he is crazy enough to do it.

This could be the signature moment of Trump's presidency. Will he be able to break congress to his will, or will he be their puppet president?

They can likely get veto proof majorities to override Trump for both.Dems and establishment repubs will likely agree on a clean debt ceiling increase and a budget with no wall and Trump and the freedom caucus couldn't stop them.Trump isn't nearly as powerful as he and you think he is when both parties in Congress don't like him.

He will be their puppet, or he will be gone. With a clinical narcissist that means he'll be gone. Now, It is just a matter of when. The executive branch has practically no power compared with the House. And when the House and Senate team up against a President he is as good as gone.
Good bye Mr. Trump ,you asshole and criminal, happy to see you go!

    very possible.

and then to our absolute joy... the voters will get to vote these sob traitors out, the way they voted out most of the democrat senators who voted for obamacare.

do not confuse inside the beltway paid off corrupt beliefs with what the majority of americans actually believe when they vote.

and if you are going to bring up one of your fake polls....
make sure it shows what seems to become known as the cross tabs... the dems vs republicans vs the independents.

    otherwise it has zero credibility.

  9. I would have said that as well, but after the way he doubled down on the wall the other night, I don't see how he can back down. He already lost face with his supporters over the Afghanistan strategy.

  10. The hypocrisy is staggering. They don't care.
