value investing: time to buy a TDI ?

  1. As a buyer in the market for a new car, thinking I could probably get a good deal on a VW diesel. CNBC reports that dealers are stuck with a big inventory. Will there be a premium for the used, pre-recall VW's that presumably get better performance?

  2. Maybe. Might want to wait and see how much the computer reprogramming degrades performance. If significant, that alone will knock the resale value.

Seems "clean diesel" fuel around here costs about 30% more than regular gas. You'd need 30% fuel economy improvement to justify the price diff, wouldn't you? And that's just for the price of fuel, let alone any additional cost for a diesel engine.

But if you're looking for a bargain in a used car, this will definitely be something to explore.

Probably just like stocks. They'll just keep getting cheaper until they hit a mkt clearing price and then the one you want will be gone. So if you want the best price, do some technical analysis. Tom Demark indicators call turns. TD 13. :D

I thought that VW dealers are not allowed to sell either new or used diesels.
