The same Florida laws that allow you to carry your gun are the same ones that allowed Zim to carry his - he's still charged with murder. You could be right about 70% of Americans agreeing with the second amendmant, I don't know. But my best guess if that you are in a jurisdiction where a sheriff is anti-gun, he was elected by an electorate that is anti-gun, and that would lead me to believe that more than 50% of those people are probably anti-gun, and that's the pool from which your jury will be picked, if you are charged by that sheriff and prosecuted by whatever attorney prosecutes you. That attorney probably has political amibitions and probably lives in that same voting district as that anti-gun sheriff, and will be appealing to those same voters. There are laws that say you can shoot people. There are laws that say you can't. If you find yourself in front of a jury after shooting someone, it doesn't matter what the law says - it matters what your attorney can sell to that jury. A jury in Maricopa County would by good for you, a jury in Chicago would not. The specific laws in each jurisdiction take a back seat to what the jury can be convinced of. Zim, and the guy mentioned in the above article can both stamp their feet and scream about their rights to carry a gun. They both found themselves locked up and facing charges. Zim has been reduced to hiding out and begging for money on the internet. That's the risk you face when you carry a gun out in public. On the other hand, Joe Horn made out fairly well when he dispatched a couple of hoodlums with his shotgun. Plan accordingly.

Not to over dramatize it, but I make my living making split second multimillion dollar life and death decisions. If I make a big enough mistake, I die a violent death. In most cases burned beyond recognition. And even with my knowledge of the laws, there is still always a risk I could fuck up. There is also a risk I'll find myself threatened with a deadly weapon sometime. It happens every day to people just like me all across the country. I just don't care to be the only guy at a gunfight - without a gun. It sucks to have to choose, but I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Despite the occasional comment I might make here. I don't carry to feel like a bad ass looking for trouble. In fact I avoid it, for all the reasons you've mentioned.

You and I are both familiar with the second amendment, you and I have both studied the laws applying to guns and deadly force. We both reached decisions based on what we know - you to carry - me to remain unarmed. Both of us could end up facing horrible consequences based on those decisions. Should I find myself under attack from violent thugs, I will no doubt regret my decision. I'm willing to take that chance. I've been in the very same situation that Zim was in, finding unfamiliar people on property where I am a resident. Zim and I handled it very differently. I am convinced, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that I made much better decisions than Zim, every step of the way. Zim's life is forever changed, even if he is acquitted. He's ruined if he's convicted. (He'll never be convicted of murder, of course, but if the jury is intructed to consider a lesser charge, he could very well end up with a lengthy prison sentence).
