  1. Those studies always use subclinical dosing.

Let's see, life expectancy was going up until various companies were able to sell their bullshit stories. Hmmm, what a surprise that most of the miracle drugs are proven to be a pile of phony crap. Too funny!!!

    Another personal anecdote:

Beside the fish oil 3 weeks before my annual checkup I started to take Niacin too, the flushing type (because that is what works). I built it up slow so no flushing occured. My colesterol levels came down by 30%, specially the trygs thanks to this fish oil+Niacin combo.* So no statin type of dangerous subscription drug was needed, just some common sense approach.

Since then I stopped Niacin (it was more like a test out of curiosity) but I am taking Lovaza (because I have free access). The doctor wants another cholesterol check around June but I don't really care for it. Oh yes, she wants me to take 4 pills, I am only taking 1-2, because they are more potent than the previously taken generaic fish oil and I got good results with those, so I don't see the need for 4 pills with higher dose...

    * I wasn't taking a lot either. 1200 mg of fish oil and 500 Niacin if I recall

  6. Well, long as we're here again, recently discovered that a can of sardines (I like them in olive oil) is an excellent lunch. Right portion, highly nutritious, tasty.
Switched to cod liver oil from fish oil pills btw. Funny since this is what I took as a kid a long time ago. Mom, it turns out, was right.

  7. Fish up update: from Will Brink @ http://www.brinkzone.com/general-health/fish-oil-friend-or-foe-to-the-prostate/

A large-scale prospective case-cohort study evaluating plasma fatty acid levels and prostate cancer risk, published in JNCI (Journal of the National Cancer Institute) online ahead of print on July 10th, 2013 has created quite the stir amongst media, health care professionals, nutrition researchers, and the dietary supplement industry…Again! To quote the great Yogi Berra, “It’s like déjà vu, all over again.”
This recent study was led by Drs. Alan Kristal from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Theodore Brasky of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in the USA as a follow up to their 2011 study. This new study analyzed data and blood plasma phospholipid status from men who participated in the SELECT (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) trial from 427 participating sites across Europe, USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. Blood was analyzed for 834 “cases” diagnosed with prostate cancer (156 of which were high-grade), and an age-matched subcohort, comparison group of 1,393 all of which were selected from the 35,533 participants.

I've pretty much stopped taking fish oil daily. I've been on a "semi" healthy eating kick with my vitimix and eating sardines with hot sause so my thinking is I'm getting most of what I need from my diet. The only supplements I take are for my joints, I know the science is spotty on those but for the low cost I'll continue just in case they are helping. My knees are finally healthy from the chondroplasty I had two years ago in November. That was a long damn recovery, I feel for those who have serious medical problems.

"semi" healthy diet = still drink beer and my trips to the BBQ for ribs. I did stop eating BBQ sandwiches so when I go it's mostly meat and a small beans.

If somebody actually reads the analysis of the study:

"7) There is also robust evidence that contradicts and opposes the conclusions and interpretation of the Brasky et al data. For example, the work of Chua et al. (2013), Sorongon-Legaspi et al. (2013), Torfadottir et al. (2013), Chavarro et al (2008), Terry et al. (2001), Harvei et al (1997), and others show a protective effect of higher levels of tissue omega-3 fatty acid status, with lower prostate cancer risk and prostate cancer mortality."

"The totality of evidence suggests there is no significant relationship (positive or negative) between omega-6 status and prostate health."

In other news, yesterday I had my 6 months check up, and I will be reporting on my cholesterol levels next week....

As I promised, I have just got the numbers a few minutes ago, and they are excellent!!!

Compared to this post 6 months ago, my total Chol number dropped even more, now at 200. That is a 1/3rd drop from a year ago, due to mostly fish oil. Obviously the higher quality fish oil helped even more, I took 3 Lovaza pills per day and no Niacin this time. It is possible the Niacin didn't even help at all, who knows, I am just 1 person in this trial.

The big drop came from pushing the Tryg levels down from 200+ to 130+ to 74 now. LDL also dropped by 1/3 from ayear ago...Mind you total Chol level itself is meaningless, but high Tryg levels are dangerous. (specially with high VLDL, which is not measured most of the time)

So anyone who wants to badmouth fish oil can kiss my hairy ass... :)

P.S.: Just for the record, I don't have a special diet, I eat everything and a lot, but I am also active....

  10. Way to to Pekelo. I've been a fish oil proponent for over a decade. Since we're giving antidotal experience here's mine. I started drinking vegetable and fruit drinks made with a vitamix since the first of April. I was having extreme hair loss and this has almost stopped. I was having a very stressful time the first part of the year so this could be totally coincidental. Two years ago this coming November I had a chondroplasty on my right knee. The recovery was slow and painful. In the last two months the recovery has accelerated to where that knee is better than its been in years. Again this could be coincidental or the workout finally kicking in. And last I feel excellent with lots of energy. I think all those greens and blueberries and kale are working. Oh and I am working out regularly and since I've felt better I'm more active in my work.
