It's really a different category of aircraft in terms of price and the performance and comfort reflect that. You can get a 2010 era 172 for the mid $200s. It's mid $400s for the same time SR22. If you can afford the SR22 than absolutely go for it. Unfortunately the OP mentioned he was on a budget, even if only driven by his spouse.

Thank you for the response, it is not to the questioned asked, from the person it was asked. That damn OP having a budget, who the hell started this topic?

Yes. Loved it compared to a 172. I did 95% of my training in the 172, kind of the standard plus the hourly rates are cheaper, but did some landing training pre-PPL in the SR22. Then once I got my PPL, did the proficiency quick training and training in the SR22, then flew it on my own a few times. Flew my family over the grand canyon in it, probably the coolest flying experience I did. Also into Sedona, so scenic and another great experience. But also a higher hourly rate, I don't remember specifically but I want to say the 172 was $150/hour, SR22 was $250/hour? Might not have been that much, but definitely more.

  4. Consider joining a flying club with the type of aircraft you’re interested in and finish your ratings.

25 hrs in, 2.5ish solo. Fun stuff. Expensive, spent $1900 last month. Well spent money!
    Time to buy?
Sat in some planes, a C177 Cardinal, seat old style, not so easy to adjust. Later model we sat in but did not fly fit better. Spouse liked a nicely done C172, cost 140K to buy. Maybe after election or in the new year. Will also consider a C182. Want to sit in others but no chances yet.

I would if I could. Only one club nearby, I am too heavy for them to allow me in with their CFI, it is a smaller older plane, poor useful load.

How tall are you? I am 6'6", concerned about head room in a SR 20 or 22. Width great. Just gotta find a lesson in one for an hour.

  9. I once flew a car off a cliff. Does that count?
