Better off as a plumber?

Discussion in 'Economics' started by nitro, Mar 18, 2011.

Is the value of an education reaching "not worth it" levels?

  1. Yes. It is one big ego trip and many jobs pay well with minimal education.

  1. That's a very good point. I wonder if money was no object is your ultimate profession condense down to your DNA?

  2. If you own a plumbing business you can make good money. Those plumber guys in queens are raking it in installing french drains after sandy. 10k a pop all covered by insurance/FEMA. They got so much work it is ridiculous.

I wouldn't hate on any business, just individuals with no prospects, no income, and a stinky attitude.

I recently had a plumber install two new gas(hot water boilers converted from oil) heaters in a duplex ..... with suppling all my materials, he bid $1200 and was done in about 6 hours
He was the lowest bid from plumbers on Craig's list
Four other bids ranged 2K to 3.5K

note....all plumbers are not master plumbers
the trade requires a 4yr apprentorship along with other requirements

$200an hr and i was happy to pay it
Craig's list does not charge him for his listing
    but requirements are stringent

    cheers

"...When I asked Douglas Staiger, a Dartmouth economist who studies education, what he thought of the new paper, he called it fascinating and potentially important. “The worry has been that education didn’t translate into earnings,” Mr. Staiger said. “But this is telling us that it does and that the fade-out effect is misleading in some sense.”

  6. The crucial problem the study had to solve was the old causation-correlation problem. Are children who do well on kindergarten tests destined to do better in life, based on who they are? Or are their teacher and classmates changing them?

    ----------------------------

I can't remember much about kindergarten but ma saved all my school papers. Looking through those papers I found an English assignment from 8 th grade. The assignment was to write our memoir. I suppose I was about 40 when I found this paper.

I read this paper to my wife and she said "So". I said "So, I wrote this in 8th grade." The paper was spot on, how things turned out. Surprised the heck out of me.

I'm not going to give too much credit to my teachers although I've had some very good mentors in my adult life.

I think the point is, achievemnt is a solitary journey.

  7. from http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/au/2416

After earning a first-class honor's degree in astrophysics, Andrew made the mistake of going on to earn higher degrees: a master's in astronomical technology at Edinburgh University (UK) and a master's in business administration at the London Business School (UK). This period of time and that which followed was punctuated with work as a scientific researcher at Oxford University, as a software developer, and later, as a "Rocket Scientist" at Bankers Trust Company in the financial square mile of the city of London, as well as in New York and Tokyo.

A lot of heartache and financial anguish could have been avoided throughout had he become what is clearly the optimal career choice for anyone anywhere: a master plumber. Nowhere on the planet is there a poor or unemployed master plumber! Too late to correct past follies, Andrew now makes his living writing software, books, and magazine articles.

Do you mean fixing them up and selling them, or selling them from a used car lot?
