Conservatives who believe in absolute free speech

Discussion in 'Politics' started by newwurldmn, Dec 16, 2022.

  1. I think if I were to run Twitter I would do the following:
    1. Delete posts that break criminal law such as calling for violence/making threats, suspend those accounts, and notify law enforcement
    2. Note posts containing libel (status in the courts and provide details of those outcomes)

I would not try to do any real time truth monitoring. I would let the courts decide that. Everybody from pro-slavery Nazis to woke non-binary Marxists would be welcomed to express their views. Let the best ideas win!

What is "absolute free speech"? Does it include yelling fire in a crowded theater?

  4. So, hate speech?

Isn't that what Trump did and thereby encouraged all kinds of scum to come crawling out of the gutter with a false sense of legitimacy?

  5. I consider most hate speech part of free speech. I don't believe you beat it by silencing it. I believe you beat hate speech by confronting it and explaining why it's illogical. I know many European governments have banned it, but I really think this is a slippery slope that shouldn't be crossed.

  6. I don't think so. Some things are just wrong. Like seeing a cockroach and saying What's the harm, there's only one? It gets out of hand. January 6 was based on lies and hate. You want to keep that kind of thing up?

Hate is an emotion. You cannot counter emotion with logic, except perhaps with the relative few who are already on the fence. You need to beat hate down into submission and not let it propagate. Because if you don't, then you can be sure it will propagate out of control. Remember, Trump was all for unfettered free speech so he could say stupid shit, until he came into power and then wanted to silence journalists who were calling him on his stupid shit. That's the trajectory. And not for the first time in history.

  7. I'm a big fan of Daryl Davis and what he has done. I don't think beating people into submission is working. Dialogue is more persuasive. I think the silencing tactic only creates more mass shooters.

TreeFrog, Cuddles has a point there. Your BabylonBee threads are obnoxious in their frequency. There's too many of them, and you do not warn readers of those threads that it is satire.

There are readers who believe in that tripe, because they do not know the source! Be more responsible there, yes?
