FSD and the future

  1. So what?

Flintlocks and muskets work but we don't issue them to our armed forces. Tesla is the only FSD using cams instead of LIDAR. It's a failed company.

"I had it drive me around rural SC for five minutes and I'm still alive" is the best anecdote ever.

We just completed a 4 day multi state trip. This was mostly highway driving, some city driving, and some rural driving.

Our hardware v4 car performed very well. I do not recall any issues on the highways or cities. The closest to a complaint I have is that for construction zones the car adapts really only at or near the cones or barriers, you know kind of like the Aholes. I normally fall in line and behave, the car acts like an Ahole. Parking is good, better than it was. Well defined spots with good paint seem to be the key. It is possible to go point to point with the car pulling out of a parking spot and finishing in a parking spot with only a few taps on the screen and a tap on the brakes to get rolling.

There were three major F ups that could have caused serious injury. Left turns on oddly angled roads seemed to be the issue, think of a Y at a stop sign. Each road was well painted, the turn completed into the wrong lane, ie oncoming traffic. The first was at a crest of a hill and the car was not allowed to continue. The second was a similar road but oncoming traffic could be observed. The car continued many hundreds of feet and did not correct itself. High pucker factor! The third time was in town, again a left with no self correction.

It would be nice if the bug reports have been worked into upgrades.

Other than the three absolutely required interventions for potentially life altering issues the car was flawless for the entire trip doing all of the driving, >1000 miles.

  3. Brilliant. Shouldn't be an issue in Midtown Manhattan. Really great synopsis, Mr Lynch. Do let us know fill x size when you commit.

I have absolutely no dog in this fight. So, I just want you to tell me why I'm stupid when I ask... isn't it possible that cams using stereopsis can be a less expensive yet still adequate solution as compared to LIDAR?

  5. NO. It's controversial within Tesla as he's pot committed to cams when everyone else uses LIDAR and the autiste refuses to admit when he's wrong. His engineering staff all wanted LIDAR. I cannot wait until nursebee top ticks this thing.

  6. "Close" only works in horseshoes and hand grenades. There will never be a scale rollout of Tesla robotaxi (unless LIDAR is adopted).

Like I said, I won't put up a fight over the details.

I see all kinds of uncertainly w.r.t. full blown jetson/FSD style robotaxis.

  8. Neither of us are in the space so defer to the consensus on the tech. Who else is using cams vs Lidar? The answer is that nobody else is using a vision-approach.
