Mercedes-Benz beats Elon Musk and Tesla to 'full self-driving' crown with automated car The German automaker claims it has beaten Tesla boss Elon Musk to 'Level 3' self-driving automation - which means Mercedes now sells a car more capable of driving itself than a Tesla https://www.dailystar.co.uk/tech/news/mercedes-benz-beats-elon-musk-29087778 Mercedes-Benz drivers could get their hands on a technology that Elon Musk has literally been promising for years—and before Tesla drivers. The German car company has just announced plans to introduce 'Level 3' self-driving in Nevada by the end of this year. The firm's 'Drive Pilot' system means drivers will be able to watch movies, play videogames, and browse the Internet while the car handles 'all aspects' of driving. Meanwhile, Tesla drivers are still stuck with 'Level 2' self-driving which requires the driver to remain in control of key aspects of the journey—despite Elon Musk promising 'full self-driving' every year for over a decade. Elon Musk has fallen short of delivering full self-driving for years - despite his promises Like a Tesla, the Drive Pilot system will require drivers to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel, and autonomous driving will deactivate if the driver falls asleep or gets distracted. The self-driving system will also only work on roads up to 40 mph. However, it still meets the US highway safety administration's framework for Level 3 automation, which states that the car "handles all aspects of the driving task while the driver remains available to take over driving if requested." The Drive Pilot software is cheaper than Tesla's 'full self-driving' system Cameras in the dashboard ensure that the driver's face is always visible. If something is placed in front of their face, like a selfie camera, the AI-powered system will deactivate.
on a side note, imo mb really lost their style / aesthetics over the years. they don't look like they have an identity anymore, just plain ugly expensive cars. tesla styling top notch.
Yeah the exterior design of the models in the last three years i have not liked. But they look hard to beat from interior design and ride comfort.
The real engineers left MB in the 90's before the company merged with Chrysler to put cheaper parts in the cars. Same thing, the putting crap in the cars, with BMW. It's like during the 90's they both figured they could make more money on servicing crappier built cars than just selling them.
The early 90s W124 was as close to perfection we got. The problem for MB was that they couldn't sell the buyers a new car every 3-4 years. So mid 90s they started making garbage. Personally, when a brand deliberately starts to give you inferior quality products in order to make more money off you, I switch brands.
