  2. The Japanese look after their own and it looks like Nada leveraged that. Surprising not to see a single mention of something like this in this piece.

"More than 99% of Japan's criminal trials result in convictions."
I heard the same thing about China. Maybe they're both false?

it’s a Frenchman (of Lebanese heritage) vs an axis power bent on genocide..... who do you think he’ll root for?

  6. Let's not lose focus on the big issue here: Nissan/Japan did not want to be gobbled up by a 3rd tier shitty French car maker that could not survive on its own. Were dirty games played? I betcha. The same dirty games that Ghosn played. Tit for tat. The end result is as desired. Rid yourself of a lower rated car company that attempts to swallow up the much more successful one. End of story.

I lean on no one but note how Japan got exactly what it wants. The usual and general outcome.

No fire without smoke, the French like to say. Japanese mega corporations are often poorly run with cut throat power intrigues, all result of Japanese culture (Olympus, Toshiba, etc.). Nissan could not have been different and the C levels probably received illegal benefits in hush hush agreements. But what happened to Ghosn and members of his team is nothing less than a coup orchestrated by government with accomplices within Nissan. And the French government's reaction speaks volumes of their own back stabbing culture. What happened to Carlos Ghosn is an absolute shame.

I can't comment on China. But the idea that most criminal trials result in convictions is not that surprising, and I suspect that it is probably true in the USA, Canada, England, and other western nations.

The part you may not be accounting for is that most criminal cases do not go to trial. Some cases get dismissed for lack of evidence, but in most criminal cases, the defendant takes a plea bargain.

Japan's criminal justice system is known for very lengthy pretrial detention. Defendants who may be innocent, or may be guilty of something lesser than what they are charged with, often give up and take a plea, because taking the case to trial could take years, and they won't get out on bail.

In the USA, in most states, the system is pretty simple: If you are white and you have money, you get to remain free while waiting for your case to go to trial. If you are not white and/or do not have money, you sit in jail while waiting for your case to go to trial.

Apparently, in Japan, they just keep most people in jail. And that puts massive pressure on the person to take a plea. You can sit in jail waiting for trial for two and a half years, and be found not guilty at a trial. But you won't get those two years back. You can pretty much forget about your job and your spouse...

The right to a speedy trial is uniquely American.

  10. Right that's why you see Uniqolo everywhere, Toyota is the number one brand in the US and Canada and along with VW the world's top car maker. Japan is world leading in food sciences, robotics, medical devices, precision measurement devices, construction, infrastructure, trains,...). Carlos Ghosn was a dirty thug, history will prove that should he ever convenience himself to stand trial.
