Pro Publica: San Francisco architect Lee Hammack says he and his wife, JoEllen Brothers, are âcradle Democrats.â They have donated to the liberal group Organizing for America and worked the phone banks a year ago for President Obamaâs re-election. Since 1995, Hammack and Brothers have received their health coverage from Kaiser Permanente, where Brothers worked until 2009 as a dietitian and diabetes educator. âWeâve both been in very good health all of our lives â exercise, donât smoke, drink lightly, healthy weight, no health issues, and so on,â Hammack told me. The couple â Lee, 60, and JoEllen, 59 â have been paying $550 a month for their health coverage â a plan that offers solid coverage, not one of the skimpy plans Obama has criticized. But recently, Kaiser informed them the plan would be canceled at the end of the year because it did not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. â¦Iâve been skeptical about media stories featuring those who claimed they would be worse off because their insurance policies were being canceled on account of the ACA. â¦Hammack recalled his reaction when he and his wife received a letters from Kaiser in September informing him their coverage was being canceled. âI work downstairs and my wife had a clear look of shock on her face,â he said. âOur first reaction was clearly thereâs got to be some mistake. This was before the exchanges opened up. We quickly calmed down. We were confident that this would all be straightened out. But it wasnât.â...
Are these policies ACA complaint. For North Carolina we only have Blue Cross / Blue Shield providing ACA complaint policies across the entire state in 2014. The rates are obviously higher for every level of equivalent coverage when compared with 2013 -- and have much higher deductibles. But as noted before North Carolina is one of the four states with the highest rate increases under Obamacare.
I don't know but when I get back home I'll update this. I'm working out of state and last time I bought health insurance while on the road I got screwed so going to sit down with my broker to go over all the options. UPDATE: Those plans aren't ACA compliant but would remain in effect through the end of 2014. But with my knee operations and having a polyp removed during my colonoscopy two years ago I would be rated or not able to get coverage. As per insurance broker discussion.
Don't know if it's been pointed out here yet, but this is actually very good news. Citizens of the USA are dopey and asleep at the wheel, but when you start messing directly with their pocketbook, they do get very upset. I wonder which state will secede first? I'm thinking Texas or Arizona.
Good Lucrum! Glad you've started going to Propublica for balanced and thorough coverage. They are very good. Send them a few bucks, if you can. I did.
Sorry pie hole, I sent all my political money to the tea party. Did you happen to notice that a former big time Obmacare supporter got back stabbed by Obamacare? That was the gist of the story ya know.
How about the idiot Dems & Obama DELETE the FORCED coverages that are 100% unnecessary ... do late 50's people need (1) maternity coverage (2) pediatric dental/vision care? Should mental health care be mandatory? No ..... Why not offer products that people actually want and need? Oh yeah ... let's get rid of the marriage penalty. Why should 2 single people each get up to $46K income to qualify for subsidies and a couple only get up to $62K (or $31K/person)? My wife and I have seriously discussed getting a legal divorce so that we can get up to $92K in income to qualify for a handout .... err, subsidy. If you can beat 'em, join 'em. I refuse to subsidize fat people who CHOOSE to make poor decisions regarding their health and then have pre-existing conditions that were/are 100$% preventable. The above changes would reduce my expected future premiums.
You would think that economic forecasters, who have been obsessing over the impact on economic growth of October's 17 percent partial government shutdown might have noticed that a lot of people have all of a sudden learned that they're about to experience a major cut in their take-home pay. You would be wrong. Hundreds of thousands of Americans had received health insurance cancellation notices by September 30, and had also learned that they will be on the hook starting next year for hundreds of dollars in premium increases on the Obamacare exchanges. It should be obvious that most affected people would have started spending less on other items virtually immediately, and that they will continue to be in major cutback mode indefinitely. But I didn't find anyone in the establishment press who mentioned it. Nor did I find anyone who noted that the millions of Americans facing higher health insurance premiums are also going to materially impact fourth quarter growth and Christmas shopping season results.
