Why wouldn't it have made more sense to return them to their former homes? Wouldn't that have been the compassionate thing to do? If you were kidnapped and taken to a foreign country and forced to work as a slave laborer, would you expect that country to make you a citizen if you were freed? I suspect that it had a lot to do with the republicans seeing a lot of potential voters in the freed slaves, much like the phony compassion we see now from democrats for illegal aliens. Unleashing the freed slaves on the Southern states, which is where the vast majority were located, was a form of post-War punishment. You can bet if 90% of the slaves lived in massachusetts and New York, they would have seen things much differently. It's awfully easy to preach morality when someone else has to pay the price for it.
Nonsense. I am not proposing anything of the sort. I am proposing a rethink of whether granting the slaves citizenship was a good thing or not. Statistically and factually, the slave descendents are the largest perpetrators of crime, especially violent crime. The police have every right to corner rapists, drug dealers and hoodlums; and then to defend themselves from potential mortal danger to themselves and society.
Just don't generalize - I think that inflames the conversation. Your words imply that all blacks commit crimes and are thugs - which I know you don't believe, but people who are looking for racist commentary (like FF and NE) will jump at the opportunity to use what you're saying as proof. The large percentage of African Americans are not thugs. It just so happens that they make up the larger percentage of violent crime despite being a small part of the population. The first step in solving a problem, as they say, is recognizing that a problem exists.
Did you guys know that one of the first slave OWNERS was a black man? You can read about it here.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Johnson_(colonist) And did you also know that many free blacks in the south owned slaves? http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2821/before-the-civil-war-were-some-slave-owners-black And that there was movement to repatriate slaves back to Africa? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Colonization_Society
If he chose his slaves primarily on the basis of big muscles and ignored intelligence, then this Black slave owner must bear some responsibility for the state of today's slave descedents. That movement to repatriate slaves back to Africa sounds interesting. The organizers of the ACS seem liked good people.
