Achieving community Herd immunity is focused on the percentage of the vaccinated in a community. Raw numbers are meaningless. Comparison to the total percentage of the population is meaningful. Red counties and states are at the very bottom of the percentage of people unvaccinated -- therefore they are very much at risk for wide-spread COVID in the their communities with the Delta variant. Especially if you take in account the generally poor healthcare infrastructure in many red counties.

However, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanuev said in a statement last week that he would not enforcing the mandate, saying the measure was “not backed by science.” “Forcing the vaccinated and those who already contracted COVID-19 to wear masks indoors is not backed by science and contradicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines,” Villanueva said in a statement. “We encourage the DPH to work collaboratively with the Board of Supervisors and law enforcement to establish mandates that are both achievable and supported by science,” he added.

Let's see how things are going with summer schools and year-round schools this month in face of the Delta COVID variant. Nearly every single school district is currently seeing stories like the two below where entire classrooms or schools must go home in quarantine after COVID outbreaks in the school. What is interesting now is that this is just not one student showing up at school with COVID and being sent home -- but it appears that COVID quickly infects all the other children & staff nearby the original infected source in the classroom.
