Interesting read of quotes by Patton regarding Russia: We promised the Europeans freedom. It would be worse than dishonorable not to see they have it. This might mean war with the Russians, but what of it? They have no Air Force anymore , their gasoline and ammunition supplies are low.I've seen their miserable supply trains;mostly wagons draw by beaten up old hoses or oxen. We can no more understand a Russian than Chinese or a Jepanese. Let's keep our boots polished bayonets sharpened,and present a picture of force and strength to the Russians. This is the only language that they understand and respect. If you fail to do this , then I would like to say that we have had a victory over the Germans, and have disarmed them,but we have lost the war. I have never seen any army at any time,including the German Imperial Army of 1912,as severe discipline as exist in the Russian Army. The officers , with few exceptions, give the appearance of resently civilized mongolian bandits The man passed in review with a very good imitation of the goose step . They give me the impression of something that is to be feared in future world political reorganization.
Here is my quick take on the current Ukraine situation. Russia will take the majority of Ukraine cities and territory within the week. The imbalance between the stronger Russian military and weaker Ukraine military is glaring. However the Ukraine military leaders know this. While they still have some semblance of an organized military remaining, the Ukraine military will adapt their strategy to focus on slowing the Russian advance down and inflicting as may Russian casualties as possible (with the intent of causing dismay in Russia over the "cost"). This will include the Ukraine military blowing up bridges and holding up Russians at river crossings and other strategies. However with the Russians holding the air, these stopping actions are only short-term. The Ukraine military does not really want to fight it out in major cities which will cost high civilian casualties; their preferred route is likely to be to hold blocking actions outside of major cities and then yield the cities to Russian occupation. Despite the calls from the Ukraine government for every citizen to pick up a gun & fight, and not allowing men aged 18 to 60 to leave the country --- the majority of Ukrainian civilians just want to avoid death and are not going to participate in an active defense based patriotic principles. The Russian political objective(s) in Ukraine are very clear. They will topple the current Ukraine government and replace it with their own. They may allow Ukraine to remain as an "independent" nation under their thumb or possible simply incorporate them as a region into Russia (or effectively start rebuilding the Soviet Union). Russia may stop its military assault if the West and current Ukraine government completely fold (quickly) and agree to allowing the puppet Ukraine state entity demanded by the Russians. The Russians hope to do complete this invasion with as few Ukrainian civilian casualties as possible -- since a large death toll would be bad world-wide PR. But the Russian military will not be held back with this being a priority - if there is a military need to meet such as invading a major city in the face of resistance they will be certainly raze the place to the ground and inflect a sizeable number of civilian deaths. The initial Russian military objectives include taking out government buildings, communication buildings and military posts in or near major cities. They are doing this with cruise missile launches and aerial assaults -- sometimes landing troops by air to hold airfields and other objectives. All as a prelude to invading and holding the major cities such Kiev. So far it appears that Russia has not targeted power plants and water plants (yet) since this would cause a catastrophic situation for civilians both during and after the war. Neighboring counties are already seeing a large number of Ukrainian refugees pouring over their borders. The world needs to prepare for a refugee crisis from this situation but so far very little world-wide support outside the directly impacted neighboring nations seems to be in gear. The next question becomes -- what happens to the Ukrainian military after Russia effectively takes the majority of the country and all the major cities in a week or so. Does the Ukrainian military simply meekly surrender, lay down their arms, and move on. Or do they melt away into the country-side an start several months of asymmetrical warfare. Or possibly a combination of both; some military units surrendering and some fighting on as guerrillas. The Biden administration will do little more then threaten further sanctions and send a few military members to Poland & other countries in the region. Effectively nothing more than a token display. The U.S. can't even get European nations to agree to cut off Russian access to SWIFT. Mitch McConnell had a meaningful statement for the Biden administration about the application of sanctions for deterrence -- “Sadly, deterrence after the fact is not deterrence at all,” he said.
Lets not underestimate the Ukrainians are fighting the largest war effort in Europe for 80 years. Putin says he is open to talks, that’s just subterfuge though. The Russians most likely will prevail but I am not going to give up on the Ukrainians. The battle of marathon was the first known battle of free people fighting off an oppressive invader. The Greeks were outnumbered and underprepared but they prevailed because they were fighting their freedom. Now obviously I’m not putting my money on the Ukrainians but I wouldn’t have put my money on the Greeks at marathon either.
