You just touched on something else that people today dont understand about insurance. Insurance was designed to protect against catastrophic events that a person can not cover with their own money. It was designed to protect against million to 1 shots like being struck by lightning.

These days people want to insure everything and they end up getting absolutely hosed because of it. One of my first jobs while going to school was at an electronic store, we got paid 50% comission for all of the extended warranty we would sell, we got paid more for selling warranty than for selling actual electronics. People dont understand that these companies are not in it by the blessing of their heart, they are in it to make a buck. They would not be selling you insurance if they were losing money on it. Thus anything you can afford to replace you should never buy warranty, or insurance on. These companies know the algorithm, they know your odds, and they are charging you a premium to "insure" you. They wouldnt do it if they were losing money.

Anyone who pays for extra insurance on something they can afford to fix themselves is getting hosed. Again this shows a problem with health insurance.

Insurance companies rely on people being stupid in order to operate, most people do not understand that the only way an insurance company is going to insure you for 3000 dollars is if they are taking in atleast 3001 dollars for said insurance based on statistics, they arent running a charity. Yet some morons will pay a couple thousand dollars extra a year to make sure their visits to the doctor are "free"
