If government involvement was removed insurance companies would only insure young healthy people,as they did before Obamacare made them cover pre existing conditions.

Removing government involvement would also mean millions of seniors with no healthcare as insurances companies are not going voluntarily cover people in their 60's,70's,80's etc.

Insurance and pre existing are mutually exclusive. You can't insure something that is already broken. You can't wait until it is broken and then insure it like it was new.

So how does somebody who makes 30,000 a year pay for cancer treatment or heart surgery if government isn't involved?

At least we agree if government was not involved young healthy people could afford insurance. And that is the best time to buy it. Insurance companies cannot cancel insurance if you have it and get sick. And I'm talking about government involvement in all aspects of healthcare. Those regulations are not free and the money spent on them goes to the government instead of the patient. walmart could do a much better job of providing affordable healthcare than the government if it was legal.

It would take government to require that.Prior to Obamacare many health insurance companies did just that.

Insurance pays for it. You buy it before you get cancer when you were young and healthy. Otherwise, we all pay for it and it is absorbed and passed on to other patients. The sick gets treated, so that is not even an issue. All this is done with no government intervention, other than a law which says you must not deny a sick person care for lack of resources. We also have simple bankruptcy laws. Merciful laws which allow somebody deep in debt to escape without resorting to a life of crime. That should pretty much take care of it. Health insurance is more about protecting assets than it is healthcare. I

Was there a warning on the policy? "Warning: This health insurance policy will be cancelled if you get sick. It is only in force while you are healthy. There is no reason to buy health insurance." People talk about health insurance like somehow you are supposed to come out ahead. Yet, they are happy if their home owners insurance never has to pay one claim.

Even if you wanted insurance insurance companies could deny providing coverage for minor pre existing conditions. Most insurance was also year to year so they could provide coverage while you are young and cancel it when you turn 35-40.
