Speaking to reporters on Tuesday as he left the White House to hold a rally marking his first 100 days in office, Trump was asked who he believed should become the new pontiff. “As Pope? I’d like to be Pope,” he grinned. “That would be my number one choice.”

Perhaps sensing that his joke might cause a diplomatic and liturgical crisis, Trump quickly offered another option, heaping praise on Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York. “No, I don’t know, I have no preference,” the president added. “I must say we have a cardinal that happens tobe out of a place called New York who’s very good, so we’ll see what happens.”
