An important and well said message. During the depression the labor movement got a tremendous boost. There were many socialists and communists in to forefront of the labor movement at that time. The CIO became the dominate union. Out of that came Social Security, Unemployment Compensation and the WPA. After the war the upper class struck back with the Taft Hartley Act. The WPA was dropped. The McCarthy hearings demonized both socialists and communists, which were lumped together. This ended productive dialog between socialists and capitalists. Medicare was added later. Starting in 1980, supply-side economics was adopted and the progressive structure of income tax brackets was collapsed, unearned income was tax favored over earned. Today most nations that exceed the U.S. in income inequality are totalitarian. This is a situation that guillotines are superbly suited for.
Life isn't fair and trying to make it so is a fools errand. Are we living in society overwhelmed with poverty? What is poverty in 21st century America? Talk to someone living a hundred years ago and they would think otherwise. Talk to someone, if we could, from two hundred years ago and they would think we all lived like royalty. The poverty we suffer is not in the material, it is in our lack of gratitude and some sense of entitlement that we somehow deserve to live like Kings.
Real life in the 21st Century isn't fair. It is a fool errand to think so. On the other hand this is the 21st \century; not the 18th. It makes no sense to use measures from the 18th century to judge the 21st.
It's the only way we can measure true progress. And I continue to believe that while our technology advances by leaps and bounds, socially we are barely out of the cave. That is our delemnia
What kind of ass backwards thinking is this? So sorry about your $5000 health insurance deductible but 200 years ago they didn’t have zippiers so you’re actually lucky. Not.
They never take the blame because leftwing democrats pretty much have a monopoly at colleges and universities. There is no way the democrats will blame themselves. There are countless programs that have failed horribly and there is never the slightest bit of scrutiny thrown their way. It is sort like the urban poor who vote almost exclusively for democrats and after 50+ years of voting that way, have nothing to show for it. There is little evidence to point to a reversal of this trend.
200 years ago the deductible was zero, zero because there was no heath insurance. 200 years ago anything remotely serious was a death sentence. Today, any person in this country, ANY PERSON, rich, poor, citizen, illegal, whatever, can walk into any ER and get treated. Try again.
So this is a little awkward for you but there was heath insurance 200 years ago. Interestingly, George Washington mandated shipowners purchase heath insurance for their crewman. I don’t blame you for not knowing that but you certainly should have known there was heath insurance.
