Broad regions of the country were locked down for polio at various times in the late 1940s and early 1950s. I documented this in previous threads on the subject. Cities and towns locked down -- no school, no theaters, no pools, no one except essential workers on jobs, no travel allowed in/out.

By the way here is some information about polio for your education:

    Is polio an airborne disease?
Sometimes poliovirus is spread through saliva from an infected person or droplets expelled when an infected person sneezes or coughs. People become infected when they inhale airborne droplets or touch something contaminated with the infected saliva or droplets.

No lockdown during polio virus. Also, the infected saliva transmission was exceedingly rare tantamount to non-existent. We don't need lockdowns for these small occurrences, just like we don't need for CCP virus.

Polio is also a paradigmatic case that targeted and localized policy mitigations have worked in the past, but society-wide lockdowns have never been used before. They weren’t even considered as an option.

No lock-downs during polio.... you really need to go back and read your history.

Next you will be stating that cities did not lock-down during the 1918 flu.

My dad came back from WW2 and returned to college to finish his engineering degree on the GI bill. He could not attend one semester since the university was closed due to the polio epidemic.

President Harry Truman spoke frequently about the need for a national mobilization against polio. But what he meant by this was to rally people to be cautious, follow medical guidelines, isolate the infected, and get the medical community inspired to find means of treatment and cure.

Though there was no cure, and no vaccine, there was a long incubation period before symptoms would reveal themselves, and while there was a great deal of confusion about how it was transmitted, the thought of locking down an entire state, nation, or world was inconceivable. The concept of a universal “shelter in place” order was nowhere imaginable. Efforts to impose “social distancing” were selective and voluntary.

In Minnesota in 1948, the state board of health cautioned against going ahead with the state fair. It was cancelled. In 1950, James Magrath, president of the Minnesota state board of health warned against large gatherings, and regretted how much people persisted in gatherings of children, but added: “Nobody can shut down intercourse of people in communities… We will just have to say, ‘Do everything you can within reason.’ You can’t close up everything…”

You put the url in tiny print since you know the right-wing AIER is pure bullshiat.... no historic facts support the assertions in their article.

The lockdowns in the polio era were no different than lockdown today. There was debate, partial enforcement, and it varied by region. Note the U.S. has 7 states that have not locked down for COVID.

  9. Stop trying to combat dumbfuckery with facts....people do not want to hear about lockdowns or quarantines in the past.....according to Trump they magically disappeared.
