Clinton "forced" by the Republicans? Two points: he decreased the deficit before the Republicans won their majority in congress which is difficult to explain if the Republicans somehow forced him to reduce spending. Then Clinton shut down the government to get his balanced budget passed which is also difficult to explain if the key factor was a balanced budget. So, once again, ideologies fail. Norway's rose 26% last year alone and last I saw it was exceeding $373 billion dollars. (If you want to see how hilariously badly rigged the Alberta Conservative's numbers are -- check out the HTF's website where the value of the fund in 2010 was supposedly $618 million and in one year rose to $15 billion!) From a fiscal conservative viewpoint, the Canadian federal Conservative party has been a catastrophe in the past. I have no reason to assume that they won't be in the future. Invest on data, not on emotions.
And they also have zero provincial sales tax, because they have a thriving economy because liberals have not came in and taxed the shit out of all the businesses who go there. They can afford to spend it, 2 years ago they cut a cheque to all their citizens for 500 dollars. Tell me something. Why is it that Ontario B.C. and Quebec all have the highest debt per capita, when they have overwhelmingly been run by liberals? I mean surely those fiscally conservative liberals have had plenty of time to fix their debt problems. Why is Alberta the only province with zero debt? Why do government employees overwhelmingly vote for liberals? I mean if conservatives are the big spenders you would think that people would vote in their own interests. Which party in both countries is currently trying to reduce spending? You are deluded.

When the US finally hits the wall, it's game over for everybody, not just Canada. Canada's advantage is that she still has ample resources to feed, water and power her population after the SHTF. A country like China is going to be completely fucked in such a scenario, there is no point to diversifying eastward.
First time poster, long time lurker. First I live in Alberta and am a large position completely independent trader/investor. I believe that I am pretty successful based on my 20 year trading record. Be that as it may, you only have my word for that. I will not touch Max with a 10 foot pole (for obvious reasons) but I love his pun name. I often use Dr. Fill for my postings but it was taken. I suspect that Big Dave is not a conservative party supporter (though fiscally conservative). It is not clear who he voted for in the recent election, - the tax and spend party (liberals politicians say exactly this or NDP - the spend and spend party. Perhaps he is the only one in his party. I am not sure. If he lives in Alberta, then he is likely a very lonely guy! I call liberals - socialists lite and NDP - socialists. Conservatives make mistakes like all things in this universe. In Alberta, the provincial premier is resigning (like all socialists he had to when he came out of the closet winning as the third choice) and the city mayor was defeated because of overspending. I doubt Dave is much of a trader but if he is, then he will not be for long based on his postings. I have never seen anyone double down like Dave on a losing position before. Like all traders, one must learn to roll with the punches and accept that you may have a losing position currently and bail out. It is not important if you are right or wrong in the long run. That is for God, and the markets to decide. I can switch sides in seconds if I realize that my market position is losing. I think most really good traders can also. Dave should do this in my view. As for Canada, many of us are worried about our neighbors just like many of them worry about us. Their is nothing wrong with either side, we just disagree sometimes and that is perfectly fine. It is healthy. We could not have a better country for neighbors looking down through history. I hope we all remember that. Yes we have snow, but we have a great government most of the time. Our armed forces are training the geese as pilots for our airforce to satisfy our budget requirements, so use caution when they are around!

The main reason Canada appears better off than the US is its massive commodity boom relative to its small population. It's not due to the competence of the Tories. Some day this will end as all booms do and whoever is in charge at the time will be the scapegoat. In the meantime don't mistake a bull market for genius. Beyond the politics it's a nice country. I spend a great deal of the year there.
