Double standard, how? Alex Jones is but job who should institutionalized. If Democrats were spreading the misinformation and dangerous conspiracy theories as him then they should be banned too. No. No double standard. Anyone making that argument is creating a false equivalency. Republicans are the biggest consumers of fake news. Jones, Hannity, Limbaugh- all of them are full of shit and they fill peoples brains with lies. They should be banned too.
I know you and all progs feel this way. It has nothing to do with hate speech or whatever. It is purely about silencing opposition. About excommunicating people from society who disagree with you. It amazes me how passively republicans accept this. Of course, establishment republicans are ok with selling out the country on a whole host of issues from immigration to trade to pointless foreign wars.
When Trump wanted to block people on Twitter, the argument was made that it was a public forum and blocking users would infringe on their freedom of speech. Now the argument is being made that social media platforms are private entities and freedom of speech doesn't exist because they can choose to block any content they choose. Do you really not see the double standard? The truth is they are private entities and they can publish or block any content they choose. Trump had every right as a citizen to use a privately owned social media platform just like everyone else. But his case went before a liberal judge in the state of New York, so the outcome was pretty predictable. Alex Jones is an idiot and the social media platforms had every right to ban him.
Not a double standard at all. The president in his capacity cannot censor people's speech by blocking them. His Twitter page is an open forum until he becomes a private citizen.
Pres. Trump is a private citizen. He wasn't censoring anyone. Twitter was censoring their user's ability to reply directly to his comments based off the features their platform offers. They have every right to do that because they're a private entity. BTW, There this wasn't the first case of it's kind. There were cases in both Florida & Kentucky where government officials were sued for blocking people on Twitter. Both judges ruled that they had every the right to do so.
The other officials probably have gotten away with it because no one's taken them to task at court. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/23/business/media/trump-twitter-block.html Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald, addressing a novel issue about how the Constitution applies to social media platforms and public officials, found that the president’s Twitter feed is a public forum. As a result, she ruled that when Mr. Trump or an aide blocked seven plaintiffs from viewing and replying to his posts, he violated the First Amendment. If the principle undergirding Wednesday’s ruling in Federal District Court stands, it is likely to have implications far beyond Mr. Trump’s feed and its 52 million followers, said Jameel Jaffer, the Knight First Amendment Institute’s executive director and the counsel for the plaintiffs. Public officials throughout the country, from local politicians to governors and members of Congress, regularly use social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to interact with the pub
Liberals have always been the biggest hypocrites! Do as I say, not as I do! They have freedoms for all things liberal and censorship for conservative views! What conservatives should do is put up their own social media platforms out there to compete against the likes of Facebook, Twitter, etc. Then, they will either have to have a fair social media platform or risk being obsolete!
Most Republicans in office are RINO liberals so, they have the same views as using censorship to silence the opposition. They are cut from the same cloth so, not much better than the liberal Democrats! That is why they continue to oppose most of President Trump's MAGA agenda including, building that border wall!
Perhaps instead of mining coal and driving trucks, Whitey should go invent their own social media platform.
